Rather than depictingDracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok(as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulboushead and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirismyet envisioned.

About the filmmaker:

F. W. Murnau was an influential German expressionistdirector, producer and screenwriter who crafted a total of 21 films, only 12 ofwhich survived in their entirety. A master of light and shadow, Murnauexperimented with new filming techniques, negative exposure, stop-motion, andlow angle camera positions. His adaptation of Bram Stoker’sDracula, Nosferatu (1922), is considered a masterpiece of GermanExpressionist cinema.
