A successful lawyer with a taste for alcohol tries to breakup a relationship between his daughter and a gangster who he helped acquit.

This 1931 movie became famous for a good number of reasons.It marked leading lady Norma Shearer’s first role, following her Oscar winningperformance in “THE DIVORCEE” and solidified her reputationfor starring in provocative films about modern women in the early 1930s. Themovie not only proved to be the first time American film audiences took noticeof future star Clark Gable, but it also marked the first time that the latterwould co-star with Leslie Howard. The two actors reunited some eight yearslater in the 1939 Oscar winner, “GONE WITH THEWIND”. “A FREE SOUL” also became famous for a scene thatfeatured a monologue from Lionel Barrymore that may have led to the actor’sBest Actor Academy Award.
