DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Alliance ishosting a Summer Social in the Old Jonesborough Cemetery on Saturday\, August 12thfrom 6:00-8:00 pm. “It used to be a common thing for families and friends togather in the cemetery and picnic\, share stories of their loved ones\, and relax\,”shares Executive Director Anne Mason. “There was nothing odd about it. Cemeteriesare sacred spaces\, but they’re also public spaces\, and we want people to comeand tour the cemetery and learn more about the community they live in.” \nTour guides and people inperiod costume will be on hand to answer questions and share history from theRocky Hill and College Hill cemeteries. Ice cream will be available for $2.00 ascoop courtesy of MOM’s Ice Cream with Munchies on Main. Ice cream sales willbenefit the historic preservation of the cemeteries. You can also help handcrank your own ice cream for $2.00. Parking is available at the First BaptistChurch located at 201 E Main Street in their side parking lot. There is noparking at the cemetery. The cemetery is a short walk up from the churchparking lot. We’ll also have a golf cart shuttle available throughout theevening from the First Baptist Church parking lot. \nDuring the evening\, theHeritage Alliance will unveil a temporary marker honoring the victims of the1873 cholera epidemic and marking the mass grave from that historic event. Themass grave was re-discovered this March by Heritage Alliance volunteer Gordon Edwardsand Dr. Robert Jones with the Tilted Tavern Animal Sanctuary. They usedground-penetrating radar to locate the mass grave. DESCRIPTION:Join the ChesterInn State Historic Site and Museum on August 17th at 6:30 pm as wewelcome Mr. Frank Collins. \nMr. Collins’ presentationis “Historic Jonesborough – Image Overlays using Google Earth Pro\,DeedMapper\, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps\, and the earliest records of Jonesborough”.  He will be demonstrating how to overlayhistoric records\, maps\, and land plats onto Google Earth satellite images.  The maps and plats include the 1796 Plan ofJonesborough\, as well as Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps (1888 through 1939).  Mr. Collins will also show work done withDeedMapper software that uses land record metes & bounds to create landplats.  Two of the first Jonesboroughland records contain hand drawn plats that will be illuminated using GoogleEarth Pro.  Using the Sanborn Fire Mapsand other records with Google Earth Pro’s transparency function will allow theaudience to compare current structures with those that existed in 1888\, 1939and other years. The program willbegin at 6:30 pm in the International Storytelling Center. The program is freeand open to the public! \nFrank Collins is alocal historian and retired Statistician and Program Manager.  Frank and wife Amy Collins live in the oldJonesborough High School\, now known as Academy Hill.  Frank researched and published a website forAcademy Hill at www.academyhill.us. \nThe 2023 seasonof History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new programevery third Thursday of the month. The full schedule is available on theChester Inn’s Facebook page and the Heritage Alliance’s website.
