SUMMARY:Basic Fermenting: Sauerkraut Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Heritage Alliance and Create Appalachia for a workshop on basic fermenting. No experience necessary! \nKatie Hoffman\, Executive Director of Create Appalachia and Appalachian foodways scholar\, will lead this hands-on session. You’ll make a small batch of sauerkraut and Katie will share tips for fermenting other veggies\, too. If you grow a garden\, you’ll go home with some great ideas about how to preserve the vegetables you grow by fermenting them. You’ll leave with a small batch of kraut to tend\, plus handouts that give you pretty much all the info you’ll need to ferment your own sauerkraut at home. \nKatie will demonstrate first\, then turn you loose to create a batch of your very own fermented goodness! We’ll supply the ingredients—you bring a sharp knife that’s large enough to cut a head of cabbage and a large cutting board. Also\, please bring your own vessel. This can be a wide mouth half-gallon mason jar or a half-gallon stoneware crock. Don’t have a Mason jar? No problem! Bring something glass that’s cylindrical in shape\, with a wide enough mouth that you can reach in to work on the kraut as it ferments. \nBecause she can’t help herself\, Katie will probably also share with you some interesting stories about sauerkraut and how it fits into Appalachian history and culture. She’ll answer questions and also share tips and tricks\, as well as ideas for using other veggies besides cabbage. Think beets\, corn\, radishes\, snow peas\, cucumbers\, and green beans. The possibilities are endless! \nTickets for this workshop are only $20.00. With only 28 spots available\, make sure you book your space early. Tickets must be purchased in advance. This workshop will take place in a pavilion in Persimmon Ridge Park in Jonesborough. It will be held rain or shine.Tickets can be purchased at jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitors Center at 423-753-1010. \nWe are proud to present this hands-on workshop as a collaboration between the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and Create Appalachia as a part of the 2023 Taste of Tennessee Appalachian food festival. \nCreate Appalachia’s Create-A-Stir Series focuses on the art of food and showcases the creativity and innovation involved in Appalachian foods\, past and present.Create Appalachia strives to make our region a better place to live and work by supporting innovation and entrepreneurship centered around the arts and creativity. We work to sustain an environment that will generate new businesses\, provide jobs in arts-based businesses\, and highlight the important role that creativity plays in the region’s economic vitality. \nThe Taste of Tennessee is partially funded through an Arts Project Support Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Taste of Tennessee promises good times\, good company\, and good eats. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about our local food heritage from September 17th – September 24th. SUMMARY:Cast Iron Clinic
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between The Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Create Appalachia\, this workshop features Katie Hoffman and Brett Tiller of Vintage Kitchen Cast Iron and Collectibles. Vintage Kitchen buys\, sells\, trades\, and restores cast iron professionally. Katie and Brett will lead a discussion about selecting the right pans for your kitchen and show you how to clean and maintain your collection—old or new. They’ll bring their portable cast iron “museum” and share a bit about cast iron history. \nDo you have a family heirloom or flea market find that needs a little cleanup? Bring it along and they may be able to tell you something about its age and origins\, as well as whether it needs restoration. (And if you want them to do the job\, they’ll give you an estimate!).Whether you’ve inherited your grandmother’s cast iron or purchased a brand-new piece\, it’s likely that you have some questions about cooking in and caring for your cast iron. Here are a few of the most common questions we’ll answer:● Is it true that I shouldn’t use soap on my cast iron pans?● Can I actually use cast iron on a glass-top stove?● I have my grandmother’s heirloom skillet\, but it’s rusty and crusty. How do I restore it?● How do I choose the best cast iron for my own cooking style?● If my pan is really grungy\, I can just throw it in the grill or into a fire and clean it up\, right? (PLEASE DON’T! Come to our presentation to find out why.) \nBring your questions—and any pieces of cast iron that you might have questions about—to the workshop. If you’re thinking about purchasing a piece\, we’ll have a few items for sale. Ladles and Linens has a great selection. Don’t miss this chance to find out what you want to know! Everyone welcome\, from beginners to collectors. \nTickets for this workshop are $10.00 and are available at jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitors Center at 423-753-9580. There are 40 spots available. The Taste of Tennessee promises good times\, good company\, and good eats. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Building the Railroads of the South and Convict Labor Leasing
DESCRIPTION:Join the ChesterInn State Historic Site and Museum on September 21st at 6:30 pm as we welcome JoshuaDacey\, Site Manager at the Chester Inn Museum for this month’s History HappyHour! \nAt the conclusion of the Civil War officials at the state andlocal levels in many of the former Confederate states vigorously fought to keepa racial caste system in place. This early Jim Crow period saw the enactment oflaws and “Black Codes” specifically targeted at formerly enslaved individuals. For generations\, skilled and unskilled enslaved men\, women\, and children were“hired out” to perform menial labor that their enslavers financially profitedfrom. In a new system of convict labor leasing that developed after the CivilWar\, state and county governments likewise profited by using their prisonpopulations to labor on commercial or private projects such as roadconstruction\, railway maintenance\, logging\, or mining.  What allowed them to do so was a loophole inthe 13th Amendment that stipulates “involuntary servitude” will only be used as“punishment for a crime.” Beginning in 1866 and continuing until 1886\,Tennessee quickly became one of the first states to implement convict laborleasing. Evidence also indicates that a system of convict labor leasing wasutilized in Jonesborough as early as 1822. Mr. Dacey will be talking about allthis and more. The program is entitled “I’m free from the chain gangnow:” Building the Railroads of the South and Convict Labor Leasing. It will begin at6:30 pm in the International Storytelling Festival. The program is free andopen to the public! \nThe 2023 seasonof History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new programevery third Thursday of the month. The full schedule is available on theChester Inn’s Facebook page and the Heritage Alliance’s website. If you can’tattend History Happy Hour in person\, each program will be livestreamed to theChester Inn Museum’s Facebook page. \nThis project is funded under an agreement with the TennesseeDepartment of Environment and Conservation\, Tennessee Historical Commission. For more information on the Chester InnMuseum\, History Happy Hour\, or the Heritage Alliance please call our office at423.753.9580 or the Chester Inn Museum at 423.753.4580.  You can also contact the organization viaemail at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information about the HeritageAlliance and its mission can be found online at http://www.heritageall.org/.Be sure to follow the Chester Inn and Heritage Alliance Facebook pages forupdates about events at the Chester Inn and other Heritage Alliance programs.
