By scientific means\, the tale’s protagonist\, the kindly Dr. Jekyll\, frees his suppressed self and plunges into an orgy of uncontrollable licentiousness that ends in an untimely demise. Although the motives and circumstances of splitting one character into two have changed from adaptation to adaptation\, the basic premise of the story is still compelling. This version is the first sound one (previous version from 1920 starring John Barrymore). It is an adaptation of two 1887 stages play by Thomas Russell Sullivan\, Luella Forepaugh and George F.
