Constitution Week Bell Ringing

On Sunday, September 13th, the State of FranklinChapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR),are hosting their Seventh Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week. Theevent will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School, located at 214 EastSabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library. The programwill include history on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution thatexpanded suffrage to women. Linda Good from the Johnson City Women’s Suffrage CentennialCelebration will be a speaker at the event. Several groups will beparticipating, including the Kings Mountain NSSAR, the
Town of Jonesborough, Fort Watauga Society Children of theAmerican Revolution, and the Overmountain Victory Trail Association. Bring your chairs, your bells, and your masksthat Sunday and “make a joyful noise” as America celebrates the 233rdAnniversary of the U.S. Constitution.
The event will follow all CDC guidelines. In keeping with theWashington County mask mandate, a face covering is required for the event for attendees12 years of age and older. Social distancing will be observed on the lawn ofthe schoolhouse, and there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. Pleasebring your own chair. Seating will not be provided on site.
The Daughters of the American Revolutionbegan the tradition of celebrating the Constitution. In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to setaside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance ofConstitution Week. The resolution wasadopted by Congress and signed into law on August 2, 1956, by President DwightD. Eisenhower. The State of Franklin Chapter of theNSDAR has been based in Jonesborough since 1929.
