Artist Exhibition 2019 Series
March 11 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Featuring the work of artists Sydney Williams and Joel Yarger. The exhibition will run through April 19th. The McKinney Center is open Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm. Most of all the artwork will be on sale to the public during the duration of the exhibition.
Joel Yarger has been drawing since he was little and is largely self-taught. He started out drawing aircraft but as he got older, he branched into portraiture and realism. Now that he is influenced and enthralled by more technical and abstracted styles, he finds hand drawn architectural drawings and renderings extremely inspiring. He believes his time spent in architecture school greatly motivated his work and how he communicates ideas, spaces and environment.
Due to their simplicity, Joel utilizes paper, graphite, grayscale tones and geometric forms in his work. He states, “All our minds require in order to understand what we see, is a convincing representation of the relationship between light and shadow, space and proximity.” Joel’s work is about simplicity and relationship. “Life is all about relationships; how we relate to our environment and any other person, animal, plant or substance we encounter. I want my work to help us all see the simple beauty all around us.”
Sydney Williams is a studio potter based in Asheville, North Carolina. She creates functional pottery, made to be utilized and loved on an everyday basis. In her process, she uses a variety of techniques to adorn her pots. Some variations of her process include carving, wax resist, and sgraffito. Sydney has always loved to draw and all through her schooling, her notes were more pages of doodles than anything else. In her current work, doodling on paper margins has been replaced by hand-carved and painted patterns on her functional pottery. Sydney believes that using handmade objects brings sparks of joy to everyday life. “My work combines simple, modern shapes with hand drawn and carved patterns, marrying utility with playfulness.”
