With the holidays just around the corner, Jonesborough will be kicking off Christmas in Olde Jonesborough with a series of fun activities on Saturdays, beginning Nov. 26, that my family can’t wait for!
Every Saturday will feature a bunch of free activities that truly get me in the holiday spirit. Santa will, of course, be on hand – sitting in his sleigh ready to take photos – and no matter how old my kids get, they can’t wait to see jolly old St. Nick. And it’s not just the little ones – my husband and I love having our picture taken with Santa ever year!

And something that we always enjoy participating in is the toy drive because Santa also accepts new or gently used toys for area children in need. It’s also a wonderful way to let our kids know that there are kids who aren’t as fortunate as they are and that they are helping by making a donation.
With the holidays nearing, shopping is always at the top of the list as everyone is looking for the ideal Christmas gifts. Jonesborough is the perfect place to start – and finish up – your shopping. I love the fact that after I’ve made my way through all the stores that I don’t have to worry about wrapping the gifts I’ve bought myself. Yes, that’s right, for those of us who make purchases in the downtown area, we’ll receive free gift wrapping! Just take your haul over to the Storytelling Center Gift Shop and they’ll have them all boxed up and wrapped in no time.
On Nov. 26, the town gets everybody in the Christmas spirit when they light a big Fraser Fir next to the Downtown Courthouse with brightly colored lights. It’s that moment that really gets me in the holiday mood and needless to say, there’s always some great music too as everyone is invited to join in and with sing along.
Also that evening, Dr. Seuss will take over the downtown area as the Grinch and other lovable characters will be roaming around the town. My five-year-old son will be all about that, as will my nine-year-old daughter. If you come dressed as your favorite Whoville resident – and you can bet I will – you’ll receive a free “Grinch treat.” And, if you’re into gingerbread houses, come help us build one, starting at 1 p.m. at the Storytelling Center (free for ages 5-12). Space is limited so don’t forget to register your kids (423-753-1010).
The following Saturday, Dec. 3, not only features the 39th Annual Jonesborough Progressive Dinner, but it’s also “Doggone Christmas” time. We’ll be bringing Sophie, our Labrador out so she can enjoy some treats and have her picture taken with Santa.  Prizes will be awarded for Ugliest Christmas Dog sweater and Dog/Owner Look-A-Like. Donations will also be accepted for the Washington County Humane Society.

Trust me, Jonesborough knows how to get you into the holiday spirit so don’t miss out – join us for some unforgettable Christmas fun!

  1. Best Santa EVER, as far as my dogs are concerned! He was kind and gentle with them and I got a great picture of my two dogs in his lap. Thank you, Santa!
